T-Ray, Lilly and Lilly's mom. One big happy family?

Reading the secret life of bees, I can't help to not feel sympathy for Lilly. The pain, loneliness and guilt she feels is terrible. I also get the feeling that she's lonely and wants T-Ray to care about her. Somehow, I can't imagine Lilly killing her mother. For some reason, it doesn't make sense to me. I think T-Ray might have something to do with the killing. Lilly was only four years at the time, and doesn't really remember what happened.

When it comes to Lilly's mother my impression is that she was a beautiful woman. However, I can't help to wonder why she packed the day she died? Maybe she was leaving T-Ray, even Lilly? Who knows? Did T-Ray and Lilly's mom have a good marriage? Because I can't imagine they did, basted on my impression about T-Ray. I also wounder about the picture Lilly found "Tiburon, SC" ??? What is her mother trying to tell Lilly?

I think Lilly's mom is trying to tell her something, and it irritates me that I have absolutely no clue what it could be? Will we ever find out in the book? And most importantly, will Lilly ever heal after her mothers death?

  1. All I can say is that you'll most lightly be satisfied with the ending. I don't want to say too much about how it ends, but I'll say that it's not one of those books where it's completely up to you to imagine the ending. I really enjoyed your point of view of the characters!

  2. Maybe T. Ray is to blame for the murder, and that’s way he is treating lily like shit, because he feel guilty himself. Plus, as he sad, lily’s mother where packing her bags, if this was the woman he loved, it must be hurting him, that she was leaving. And it might be the reason why he turned in to the man he is

  3. I totally agree, I have a bad feeling about T. Ray. I think he is involved in the murder and that he isn't telling the write story to Lily. But how can a father lie to a child about killing her mother? That's just not right !

I think her mom might have been packing her things and planning on taking Lily with her when she ran away. I mean, if T. Ray was so hard to live with, why would she leave Lily, a baby, behind? She obviously knew he was a monster. Or, one might think that he wasn't a monster before she left, as Isabel said. T. Ray might have become the monster that he now is after Deborah leaving. The reason? a broken heart.

I think a girl never heals after the loss of a mother. She is missing out on a lot, and with that crappy father it makes the hurt even worse. But, Lily might be able to come to an agreement with her feelings, she is entitled to be hurt, but she has to learn to live her life. That's what her would have wanted. Lily has to get a bit older to realize this though I think, but living with the Boatwrights and learning to enjoy life and all the good things about the world might help her along in the growing and healing process...

    Great blog Hannah!!
