Why
I choose Down and Out in Paris in London by George Orwell mainly because i find Orwell to be an interesting writer. I have read 1984 and some of his thoughts on other subjects, and although he is mostly known for criticizing a totalitarian society, he also wrote about issues in contemporary democracies. I think it will be interesting to read his depiction of poverty, and perhaps an implicit critique of contemporary society in the context of the lower classes. The book is also a "semi-autobiography", and Orwell being interesting, it will probably be worth reading.
