Segregated love

While living at the Boatwrights, Lily makes a new companionship. Zack is a young African American boy who works for August with the bee hives and collecting honey. Zack has big hopes for his future, he wants to be a lawyer (which is almost impossible in the south, if one doesn't move to the north maybe). Zack and Lily become really good friends while working together and you can almost imediatly see the chemistry between them is there. The only bad thing is that white girls are not supposed to like African Americans. But Lily doesn't see his color, she sees his personality and feels how happy he makes her. Lily feels that it isn't fair to say that color has a matter in love, she likes Zack and Zack likes her. Why should the rest of the worlds thoughts and ideas stand in the way? Lily does understand however, how hard it would be for them. They would recieve jugdment from every cornor of the world.

I ask you, if you were in the same position as Lily, loving a man which the world didn't approve of, would you risk the judgment and comments you would recieve for the rest of your life for happiness? Take under consideration that Lily is very young too, would the decision be different if she was older? Or, do you think Lily should follow the world's rules about right color and wrong color and concentrate on fixing the troubles and problems she is already carrying?

  1. Yes, I think her desition would be different if she was older! even though, this seems serious enough, when you get older it becomes even more serious. When you get that attached to a person, you're willing to do everything for that person, and in this case: go against all odds and dont care about what the rest of the world thinks. I have no Idea what I would do, If I were in that situation. It really depends on how serious it gets. I like to think that I wouldnt care what everyone else thinks, but im really not sure! what about you Birte?? :)

  2. I agree with you, Solmøy:)
It's true that Lily is only 14, so that has to be taken under consideration, BUT as we've discussed earlier, Lily is very mature for her age, and she definitely seems older than 14 (although I think she's kind og naive). But anyhow, I believe that Lily and Zach could make a great couple. Zach seems like a smart boy, who knows what matters in life, and what doesn't. I definitely think he's mature enough to have a serious relationship with a white girl, without caring what other people thougt. However, I don't think that Lily is as ready for that kind of relationship as Zach is. It's probably easier for her to ignore what people think, but as I mentioned earlier; she is a bit naive! I therefore think that she may see this as an easy task, while the reality is quite different.

If I were in Lily's situation, I have no idea what I would have done. I just hope Lily's smart enough to figure it out, and do what's right for her and Zach!

And btw: Interesting and fun post, Birte!

  4. I hope I would be strong enough to stand up to the world, if it was really love. I have heard it said that love conquers all, but dang, that is naive. I think it would be dangerous for Lily and Zack, but maybe, at the end of the day the fact that they could see each others faces smile, then it would all seem worth it ?

    Thanks for commenting !

  5. Do you think the social conditions are described accurately?

  6. YES! I believe that they are described accurately. I am not sure I know exactly what you mean by your question, but to my knowledge I know it would be hard for a black boy to be with a white girl. At that time, it just wasn't right.
