Our lady of chains

Lily and Rosaleens adventure start at the Boatwrights house. Lily sees a statue that amazes her all through the story and to be frank, the story behind the wooden statue caught my interest.
This wooden statue kept the hope of so many desperate and discriminated African Americans, and maybe it can help keep or give Lily hope? It has been passed through generations and finally it ended up with the Boatwrights and has helped Lily along the way. Lily saw Our lady of Chains as the Virgin Mary and prayed to Mary for help and strength to tell August the truth.

Lily is raised a Baptist, but now she is exposed to many different religions and one true mother appears to her and appeals to her. The mother of thouhsands, the queenbee: Virgin Mary. While reading this book you will discover many women who are mothers in their own way for Lily and the Virgin Mary is one of them amongst August and Rosaleen. Lily learns how to have faith and maybe this faith will lead her to have hope, a hope for a better future for her, Rosaleen and the Boatwrights. Maybe she even wishes for a better future with T. Ray?

Anyway, my point was that Our Lady of Chains might have a bigger role in this book than what I first thought...

  1. Nice post, Birte! I think it's very true what you say. To be honest, I've only thought about Rosaleen and August as Lily's "mothers", but you're right, Virgin Mary can be seen as a motherfigure for her too. Thank you for letting me see that, it made the story just a bit more interesting.

And so far, what do you think about the book?

I didn't like it in the beginning, and found it a bit hard to sit down and focus on the story, as I didn't think it was very intriguing, but I have to admit, it has kind of grown on me, and now I actually think it's kind of fun! Getting to know the characters (who actually to my surprise are quite interesting) is fun, and all their secrets keep me wanting to read more. I look forward to watching the movie!:-)

  2. Well, your welcome. I just figured out more about the statue in chapter nine... and then it hit me !

I love the book. I agree, the book was hard to focus on at first. I tried to do it in America for an assigment, but i just bought the cliff notes in stead... never read those either. haha. But as I came further in the book I fell in love with the characters and the story has really caught my eye. The chapters just go flying by as I read.

We should watch the movie in class!!!

  3. Yeah, we should! But I doubt that's going to happen though, because the ones who's reading the other books probably want to watch "their movie", and that could take a looot of time :-( But it would be great if we were able too though (hint hint, Tor)

  8. Ma book is getting better. The reason for this is that i have finaly gotten some time to watch the movie based on the book 1984 which is the book that little brother is "based on". sooo, yeah, it makes more sence, some names, and the setting the book is set in.

I have read some comments abou the book on the web and i am anxious about the ending. Ppl say that it isnt that good. :(

    But well see

well, for your sake I hope the ending is good, would be a shame if you had read all that and then figure out the book is terrible and without sense.
