My question this time is "what do you guys really think about May?"
As I've read more and more about her, I must say I find her very interesting and fascinating! She is obviously very sensitive, as she starts crying hysterically if anyone gets hurt or anything bad happens. She becomes considerably sadder than the person it happens to. When June for instance fights with Neil, June doesn't get nearly as upset as May does. Why do you think that's the case? Do you think May has always been like that, or do you think something has happened to her that made that sensitive? Perhaps her sister April killing herself? I don't know. What do you think?
May is without a doubt the one I like best out of all the sisters. August is definitely the nice and welcoming one, but May is a bit mysterious, which makes me really interested. Before I found a picture of May on the Internet, I pictured her with fuzzy hair, a bit shabby clothes (don't know why really) and kind of a crazy look in her eyes. But then I found this picture (From the left: August, May, Rosaleen, June and Lily) and she is obviously portrayed differently in the movie than what I expected. But still, I think it suits her. The woman in the movie fits the role of May even though she doesn't have fuzzy hair, shabby clothes and a crazy look.
So.. Do you think she's just sensitive or mentally challenged?
And by the way; searching for an interesting analysis of May, I stumbled over something very interesting about May. I'm not going to tell you what it is, because I don't want to spoil anything (unless you've already read it of course), but what I can tell you though, is that you're in for a real treat!

I forgot to say that I didn't manage to find an interesting analysis of May, but I'll see if I can find one for my next post.
SvarSlettLove your blog and that you chose this topic.
SvarSlettI dont think May is mentally challenged. I believe the story about her twin dying and that all April's hurt got transferred to May. May is an amazing girl, she just takes troubles harder than anybody else. It doesn't mean she has to be challanged, just different. Off course her twin sister's death effected her, but should it have so much? Can a person really be so connected to a person, a sister, a twin, that all of her feelings get transferred into an other person?
I love the idea the sisters had about the "Wailing Wall". It is such a faboulous idea! Gosh, some writers are just amazing. How did the writer make that up?
Anyway, I agree with you, May is an exciting girl who never stop surprising me or Lily for that matter. I cant wait to figure out more about her!
Wait, one final question... If May feels double pain, does she also feel double joy?
Yeah, the wailing wall is a really good idea, and it seems to work excellently for poor May.
SvarSlettWhen it comes to your question about her feeling double joy or not, I am not quite sure what I think actually. It makes sense though. Because if the pain she's feeling is doubled, than all her other feelings should be doubled too. But May doesn't seem like a happy person, and we haven't seen her be super excited about anything so far (or am I remembering wrong here? If so, please correct me).
I believe that she's able to feel a lot of pain, but that what happened to April kind of destroyed her abilities to being happy. But I don't know, perhaps we'll see her excited and happy as the story goes further.
And I agree with you in her not being mentally challenged. Maybe that's because I feel sorry for her, and therefore I don't want to picture her being anything else but just very kind and sympathetic. Some would probably say that she is though. But personally, I think she's nothing but a sad, but sweet and kind girl with a very warm heart.
I think May is a happy person, I see her as a child sort of. She has to be watched over and hyms when the pain in the world attacks. She has her moments when joy hits her, like at the dinner table or when the weather goes up to about a 100 degrees farenheit. In Chapter 8, May and Rosaleen are dancing in water to cool themselves off. May is screming of happiness and she is dancing around while trying to get August and Lily to join. This is the only time I can remember her really happy, other than that she can seem like the silent type.
SvarSlettI agree, her abilities to be happy might have been weakened. But then again, so has Lily's abilities after the loss of her mother. I think both May and Lily has a long way to go when it comes to healing. May has experienced the death of a close sister, and Lily the loss of her mother. It obviously effects them in everyday life. Maybe they can help each other heal and to regain the emotion happiness and to leave some of their sorrows behind.
It must be hard for Mary to bare the worlds sorrow on her shoulders, to be honest, if I had to do that, I would be just as silent as May. May has, I agree, a big and kind heart.
So now that May has killed herself, I have to ask you the question again, Birte!:-) Do you still think that she's just veeery emotional, or have you changed your mind?
SvarSlettI personally think that she is kind of a mix between the two. She's obviously very emotional, but she has to be a bit mentally challenged too.
